Despite Miuna's usual attitude towards trading phone numbers, letter writing was something she loved.  Her mother was a die hard fan of cute stationary, and Miuna consistently received packages upon packages adorned with small animal stickers and patterned tape.  Thus, when the student council came around asking for people to start a new pen pal trend, the young student was more than happy to sign up.  Now she sat in her room, the paper before her nearly ready to be sent out to whoever was unfortunate enough to receive it.

Dear Anonymous,

It's nice to meet you!  I'm guessing that since you're receiving this, you also signed up for the anonymous pen pal game.  This school is so strange, but it's great that we get a chance to support each other.  I'm only a first year, so I'm still freaked out by the idea of 'high school'.  After all, there's so many people and so much to do.  A little encouragement is always welcomed.

She paused for a moment, realizing she was getting off track.  After all, the point of the letter was to support other people.  She tapped her pen against the table while she thought, finally leaning down to continue writing.

What about yourself?  I know we're not really supposed to reveal too many personal details, but what year are you in?  Are you involved in any clubs?   What kind of hobbies do you have?  You don't have to tell me everything if you don't want to.  I'm just really interested in the kind of person you are!

Most importantly, what kind of dream do you have?

So he'd heard about this letter project from other kids in school and finally visited the box with the notice, thinking it might be a fun idea. He really liked getting to know other people, even if it was anonymous like this. It also gave him freedom to talk to someone without... them necessarily knowing who he was. That thought gave him much excitement and so he decided to sign up. His first letter came to him when all others were distributed in his class. He eyed curiously at the cute stationary and flipped it around a few times to examine it. It wouldn't be until later, after taekwondo practice and on the bus home, would he read it to himself.

He squinted. The handwriting was... neat, so perhaps this was a girl? Not that it really mattered. As he finished up the short letter, he held onto it on his walk home and settled it in his room. He would not write the reply until he'd finished studying and some of his homework. In the quiet hours of 9PM, he began to write a reply in simple tear-off notebook paper, simple envelope and dragon stickers.

Hi, anonymous!

How's it going? It's nice to meet you. And I agree, the school is large and there are a ton of people to meet! Maybe I may not even meet you, because it is like a beehive : ) But let's hope for the best.

I'm a second year. And your question is cool! My dream is to be a protector and provider to those I love. I want to be strong for both my friends and family who are in hard times. That's why I continue to smile even in the face of fear or defeat. Unfortunately, I still have a long way to go. Life-wise, I want to go to college- a good school, but nothing over the top. I would definitely study to be a private investigator or police. Maybe even the secret police! Haha. Not so secret after all.

Folding the letter, he tucked it into the envelope and sealed it with a cartoon dragon sticker and slipped it into his bag. The next day, he'd drop it into the appropriate box for distribution with nothing but this name: MATSUKAZE

Miuna was nearly jumping in place when she opened her mailbox to find a new letter inside. From the plain appearance and the dragon stickers, it was definitely not from her enthusiastic mother. She quickly ran inside, ignoring her roommate's confused look to sit down and tear open the envelope. She read it carefully, trying to decipher the handwriting. She didn't recognize it from any of the papers she collected in class, probably meaning that she didn't know them. She felt troubled, wanting to ask their identity right away but not wanting to ruin the surprise.

She pulled out a different set of stationary this time, along with a roll of dragon washitape. Maybe this person was interested in fantasy stuff.

Dear MATSUKAZE,

Your name is so cool!!! The dragon stickers were also a nice touch. I've saved the purple one - he's my favorite so far (✿ ◕ᗜ◕)━♫.*･｡ﾟ.

I can't believe you're a second year! It feels like I was born in the wrong year, everyone who I've met is older than me so far. Maybe if I do really well in school they'll let me skip! Oh, but I don't think that's possible with my grades, I'm pretty bad at history.

Your dream sounds amazing!!! I also want to be a protector for the people I love. It's really hard to be strong at times, but I think you'll be able to achieve your dream. You seem like a really hardworking guy? Girl? Whatever you are! But I don't know so much about the investigator dream. Maybe if you can figure out who I am, you'll have a shot Mr. Holmes!

Lol just kidding. I think you'll do really well! Your first job is to figure out all these strange egg rumors. If you crack the code, I'll treat you to the best ramen in Otonoki.

As for my dreams, I want to go to college and enter some sort of research field! I'm thinking meteorology or something to do with biology, but I definitely know I want to travel around and help people. I'll go to places hit by natural disasters and study its effects while providing relief effort.

Maybe it's too big of a dream, I think I'll try aiming for college first...

With that, Miuna sealed the envelope and stuck it in her bag to mail the next day.  Homework would have to wait, she had an pen pal to uncover.

He thought it kind of childish to still have these dragon stickers around. They were from when he was still in middle school - but embarrassingly, he still thought they were cool. He contemplated maybe getting something cuter to disguise his gender, but he had a feeling that the first letter gave it away. Either way, he pulled the second letter from his mailbox along with some letters from the school. Shoving the letters into his bag, he walked to his bus stop reading the next letter.

Much to his delight. Dragon washi tape! After reading the letter, he sat back and looked up at some random shaving cream ad on the bus. What to say…? Well, the other person was definitely a girl. There was no doubt. This person also had the same goals and dreams that he did - or rather, very similar. He squinted, “I wonder if it’s Jojo-chan…” He looked at the letter again and examined the handwriting, wondering if he should… well, ask.

He went home, had his dinner, washed up and finished his homework. Before bed, he wrote another letter and kept on using his dragon stickers.

Dear Soulcrusher,

What’s the deal with the eggs lately? I just don’t get it. I found one fancy looking egg and my mom is convinced not to cook it, even when I told her to. Hey- you can’t treat me for ramen if you don’t know who I am! Is this a baiting strategy?

I am….a hardworking person. Let’s leave it at that. You sound like you are also hardworking and very active!! I admire that!! Haha, Mr. Holmes, hardly… at the rate I’m going, I would have to study being a cop first.

Research is cool. Please help us better predict bad weather, so we can stay home and relax. Haha. The rainy seasons are very dangerous, and I think we need all the help we can get…

Miuna had taken to cutting out each dragon sticker and putting them in a little scrapbook in her drawer. She'd developed an interest in saving the most memorable parts of Seiyo thus far. Even if the egg mystery was starting to reveal itself, there was still so much to remember. She had her pictures of that strange book she first found about the eggs, her ticket stub from the Rockband game at Aosaka Arcade, a polaroid picture of her egg. They were all important to her and the dragon stickers only served as her newest additions.

She didn't use the same washitape this time, instead using dragon eggs and using a dragon ink stamp. She wondered if her mysterious penpal even liked the small decorations. She'd have to make a point of asking. After all, whatever this school project was kept her looking forward to waking up the next morning. She didn't want to spoil such a good thing.

Dear MATSUKAZE,

You figured me out!  I suppose you'll have to reveal your identity at some point if you ever want the free meal.  Think of it as my trump card.  If you tell me your identity, I'll even treat you to a second free meal of your choosing!  Unless it's some weird tomato orchard place.  Count me out then, those things are gross.

Are they fruits?  Vegetables?  I don't even think they know!

Not on purpose though!  I just oversleep a lot and forget when lunch period ends!  Sometimes I fall asleep outside - please wake me up if you find me.  You will help my grades tremendously if you do.

By the way, do you like the washitape?  I have more than just dragons, if you're interested in spicing things up!

Just as she put together the envelope, Miuna took a picture of her stationery drawer, revealing the heaps of stickers and tapes her mom sent her.  On the back of the picture, she wrote "I have too many!" before sealing it with the letter.

He nearly forgot to pick up the next letter on his way to kendo practice, wanting to anxiously open it ahead of time, thanks to the cool looking dragon ink stamp on it. This girl really wanted to get to know him! He practiced discipline and opened it after getting home, having a bath and dinner. It was at this point he started to contemplate if he really did know her. He doubted it, but the tone sounded a little more familiar than normal. She definitely wasn’t Junko, he confirmed that, but someone quite similar to her.

He wrote back, still thinking on it. The picture of her drawer was interesting, and it definitely confirmed the fact this person loved to write letters, and decorate things.

You make a very compelling offer. I like free food! And more free food! I personally love okonomiyaki and dare I say, burgers. But most of all, sweets. Though, you can’t really have sweets for breakfast lunch and dinner. It’s not good for you.

Don’t say that, I’m sure you’re doing fine in school. ^^ You sound very hard on yourself. Chin up! …Haha, how can I wake you? What do you look like? Maybe I can find you someday. I can give you a hint. For a guy, I’m not really tall…

I love dragons. They’re my spirit animals. : ) You know all these weird egg things showing up? I always want a dragon to hatch out of one, that I can take care of… silly me.

It was oddly embarrassing to admit to that, sort of boyish but how was he to help that? In these letters, he felt the most transparent as ever. Even if they would never truly meet(?), he felt close and open with this person. Placing dragon stickers in a little “scene” around the envelope, he tried to relate to her in that way. It was quite fun, he thought.

School had snuck up on her faster than she would have liked to admit. Miuna went from having no homework to having piles upon piles of exams to study for and projects to complete. She hadn't even noticed the letter crammed into the back of her mailbox until three days later, when she got a call from her mother expecting a package. Reluctantly the girl pulled herself away from her textbooks to go check her mailbox, only to find it filled with miscellaneous goodies from her parents and a very specially decorated envelope.

It took a few tries to get everything back to her room, but after clearing away the glitter that was no doubt glued onto every single piece of stationary from good old Mom, Miuna sat down at her desk. The envelope was more elaborately decorated this time and the girl took extreme care in not ruining the dragon scene. She placed the intact envelope to the side to stick in her scrapbook later, unfolding the letter and reading it quickly.

Dear MATSUKAZE,

I'll have you know sweets for breakfast is my specialty! No parents means chocolate chip pancakes at least once a week, whip cream included. Then homemade chocolates as a club snack and ice cream after dinner! You're talking to a professional here, I know how to make it happen ᕙ༼ಠ͜ʖಠ༽ノ.  You should consider joining my club for some quality snack time.

Oh, are we playing twenty questions now?  Well I doubt you're shorter than me, I'm probably on the smaller spectrum of girls here.  All my friends (boys and girls) are taller, it's not fair!  I was pretty tall back in middle school, then I just stopped.  As for my hint, hm.... I have long hair! Though how I style it might give my identity away, so that's a secret for now.

Are you sure a dragon won't hatch out of yours? Mine hatched, but it's nothing like I expected.  I think a dragon would have been at least twelve times cooler though, possibly thirteen.  Have some hope, your wish might still come true!

Miuna dug through her drawer, looking for some of her fantasy stickers.  She included a few knights this time, along with a tiny gold pile for the dragon to sit on.  This pen pals deal was a good way to start going through the piles of stationary she had.  With any luck she'd actually manage to run out before her mother sent her a new batch.
