Math Club is not Scary [Minji/Ji-Yoo]

[Minji]

The school day had finally ended - and Minji found herself moving by habit to the math club room. She knew she was going to be the only one there, as usual. Her feet carried her towards the room quickly - even as the girl slipped through the rest of the students clamoring to leave. 
Rolling the door open she let out a low sigh. She wasn't sure why she hadn't disbanded the club - sure enough sometimes people dropped by if they were struggling but she'd yet to have anybody turn up who actually really like maths and just wanted to talk with her about it. There'd been a twitter pun off ages ago - but she was fairly sure that most people found math too difficult or boring to take enjoy it. She shrugged a little to herself and stepped into the room - setting herself into her usual seat. 

"I guess loving math by myself is fine too though." 

Minji shuffled through her bag and pulled out a few different books and along with it a few snacks. It was unlikely anybody would join her - so might as well settle in and get some studying done. She certainly didn't need to, but a little extra never hurt in the long run. 


Ji Yoo

With the exams only a few days away, Ji-Yoo had exempted everyone from club duties and sent them home to study, with intentions to do so herself. The girl usually stayed in the club room or library to study ( depending on what she needed) because she often found it to be more comfortable than her home. The large mansion felt surprisingly stuffy sometimes, for certain reasons. But since nobody objected to her staying at school over time, she will do that if she can.

Unsurprisingly, Math was still a huge problem. Although Ji-Yoo spent more time on it than any subject, there were still so many things she didn’t understand. And high school math was harder than middle school math by far. She sighed, resting her head on the desk. He mind badly needed a break, but she couldn’t take one. What if she really fails the exam this time around?

Out of the blue, Ji-Yoo remembered something that had happened some time ago. There was someone, well, in fact, more people, who said that she should get help from a girl who was apparently really good at math, however… Ji-Yoo had stalked her twitter a bit and felt that she was the kind of person who would often get into trouble. She usually avoided those kinds of people, but if she really was like that, then being good at math wouldn’t make sense. Like, weren’t only smart, proper people supposed to be good at academics?

Ji-Yoo wasn’t that desperate anyway, she wasn’t but… somehow she ended up right at the door of the Math club that she knew the girl was running. Why was she even here? Right after deciding to leave, a bunch of students who looked like they belonged to the Guardians clique started to flood the hall. They were apparently having a demonstration or an event of some sort. ….Aaand some older students pushed Ji-Yoo right against the door with a loud thud as they were passing. Dang it guardians, Ji-Yoo hated them with a passion.

On another note, she hoped nobody was inside to hear her.

As much as Ji-Yoo had hoped Minji definately heard the bang on the door - and for the first moment the second year ignored it. The hallways were still fairly rowdy, she could hear a loud group passing by so it wasn't that much out of the question. But it didn't sound like the, well whatever had banged into the door had moved on. 

Minji was kind of use to people just banging on the door as they moved passed, it was usually Ringo who did it purely to try and bother her. Obviously it wasn't the case this time. 

Shrugging a little she shoved back her chair and moved towards the door. Carefully sliding open the door she was more than a little surprised to see somebody still stood on the other side. She rose a single eyebrow - she was fairly sure that this was the girl that had called her scary on twitter, she hadn't thought that she'd actually turn up at Math Club considering that was her opinion of her.

"Are you alright?" She furrowed her brows slightly, barely - before peering around the door. Further down the hall she could see capes and assumed that the girl had probably been knocked into the door - most of the Guardians she knew of were fairly kind or at least she didn't think they'd knock anybody into doors. She let out a low sigh - obviously every group had their bad apples. "Haaa - that wasn't cool of them huh?" She looked back towards the other girl. Her mind once again flickered back to her comment. Minji hadn't exactly been offended, she just never thought of herself as 'scary' she supposed she could understand why she may have come across that way, and people at the skate park did have a habit of calling her a monster after she did certain stunts. 

"Oh! Were you coming here for math help or ?"Minji wasn't sure if the girl was actually there for math club or if she'd just been passing by and had hit the math club door. 

    

[Ji Yoo]

Ji-Yoo was so confused and embarrassed upon seeing the girl come out from the club room that she even forgot to release her breath. She was going to leave, but now she was kind of… afraid to do so. The girl even furrowed her brows at her! That seemed close to a death threat for Ji-Yoo. Maybe she hadn’t been wrong after all. Maybe this was really a violent girl who just happened to like math. Maybe strange things like that did happen after all.

“ Um…er..I…” Ji-Yoo was trying not to seem very vulnerable or scared, she had an image to maintain after all. “I was just leaving…” She was in such a hurry that she tripped and fell flat on the floor and out of her open bag came a bunch of math textbooks that looked very…”used”. So much for fleeing.

[Minji]

Minji hesitated for a split second before she moved to help the girl - picking up the books that had slipped from the girls bag before offering a hand to help her up. Obviously the girl was scared of her, so she smiled as kindly as she could. "Are you - okay?" 

The books in her other had felt well worn and she glanced down at them. All math books. Some of them she recognised and she knew she had them herself. Minjis were just as used - although hers were also a little more advanced as well, considering she was the year above the other girl. For a second she considered that the girl maybe had come to visit the club room. She glanced back at the girl. "Were you coming for some help or?"

She was becoming increasingly aware of how she could appear frightening to other people - she just hoped the fact that she was starting to look a tiny bit worried wasn't coming across even worse.

[Ji Yoo]

Ji-Yoo didn’t move from the place where she fell for a while, hiding her face in embarrassment. Did that really have to happen? Just as she was running away? Every possible scenario that the girl could think about involved her getting in trouble, which was one thing she was trying to avoid. She prepared herself for the worst situation, but, looking up, the girl in front of her, the very student whom she thought might be dangerous… was looking at her with a worried expression. On top of that, she seemed to have also picked up her textbooks.

Ji-Yoo really didn’t know what she should think anymore. Reading people wasn’t easy, especially since she wasn’t around others that much at all. Maybe she had been wrong, she could admit to that but Ji-Yoo decided to just be cautious for the time being. “I’m fine, um….” But was it really okay to admit to coming for help? Maybe there were some other members in the club, that would certainly make Ji-Yoo feel more at ease. “I… came to take a look at the club.” Pretending that she wanted to join while analyzing the environment and the other members might be a smart choice before asking for help, the girl decided.

"For real?" Minji lit up in a way that she often didn't. Somebody actually interested in joining the club was rare and she was so, so thankful that the other girl had turned up. If that was her actual intention. She coughed a little - trying to calm her self down, she would probably end up scaring the girl off by being to happy. "Oh, um, come in then!" The room was obviously a little threadbare, to her knowledge clubs normally brought bits and pieces as they came and went, but considering she was the only member -

"I'm sorry - I'm the only member at the moment." She shrugged a little - and passed the girl her books back. She supposed her being the only member did put off a good number of people. She was aware that she could appear a little thuggish, but thinking about it, that probably had a direct effect on member intake. "I mean I'm not totally surprised. Maths is probably the most least liked subject for people, right?" It wasn't exactly something that upset her, but it would have been nice to have a few like minded people to hang around with. 

[Ji Yoo]

Ji-Yoo followed cautiously what seemed to be a girl trying to contain her overexcitement back in the Math club room. It wasn’t like she couldn’t understand, Ji-Yoo was always happyto welcome new members who were passionate about literature. She almost felt half bad that her intention wasn’t to actually join her club.

But looking at the actual room, Ji-Yoo’s breath almost stopped. What do you mean there aren’t any other members? Did nobody in this school like math or did they also think the girl was scary and didn’t want to be around her? At this point, the girl was torn between wanting to run away again and actually feeling sorry for the girl. Her own club hadn’t been founded long and she already had 6/7 members. How long had this girl been all alone here?

“ ahaha, you’re right…” Ji-Yoo sighed and took her textbooks back. I mean, she didn’t actually like math either, it was just something she needed to do. She couldn’t stand getting bad grades on anything, so she always did her very best. She also envied people who had a natural talent for what she wasn’t good at, but… was she really safe here, or was she ultimately wrong about this person? Ji-Yoo herself had to admit that she often misjudged people.

“ You must know from twitter that I’m not exactly good at math so… I don’t know if you’d want me here.”

[Minji]

"Honestly, even if you don't want to join -" She shrugged - glancing around the room. She kind of wished there were more members, but honestly there was no point if they didn't actually want to be there because they liked the subject. But she was still always happy enough to help people out of they were struggling. "-I'm okay helping you out. I mean, I normally just help other people out a lot."

She indicated the room. "Most people just come over here if they want some help or they missed a lesson or something." She shrugged a second time, she supposed it was okay. Teaching other people actually just improved her own skills so it never really mattered to her. "Or at least thats how the club has been working since the start of the year. 

"More than a few times I thought about just changing it to 'tutor club' but I still don't think it'd attract more people." She let out a small snort of laughter and put herself back in her seat - she didn't want to make the girl feel like she had to stay. So she flipped open one of her own books, there were a few things she needed to brush up on herself. Exams were just around the corner after all.

[Ji Yoo]

Ji-Yoo started to feel a little guilty for misleading the other girl. The more she spoke, the first year started to think that she’d made a wrong impression of her. The whole situation seemed miserable, how she’d founded a math club but there was virtually nobody interested in joining and she spent the day just studying by herself or helping people who selfishly came here and probably did nothing for her in return. “So, are you fine just helping everyone like that?”

Sure, Ji-Yoo was too selfish to understand that, but she tried anyway. “I mean, isn’t it frustratin, getting taken advantage of?” Ji-Yoo watched as the girl sat down and opened her book. She allowed herself to be more relaxed and took a seat as well. It was a difficult decision whether to be the same as the others and just ask for help especially after she’d been mean to her. Usually she wouldn’t care, but now it just seemed wrong.

[Minji]

"Ah - it's not really frustrating - " She looked up from her book, smiling a little as the other girl sat down. "I mean, I know they're not here to stay." She shrugged a little - and flipped through a few pages of her book without looking. She really didn't mind in the long run. Honestly it was kind of selfish of her just keeping the clubroom to herself and not just giving up on the club all together. It was nice for people to come by and want help from her even though it wasn't exactly a 'popular' place to be.

"It's like - I love math, it's one of my favorite things." Minji looked back down at her book, fiddling with one of the corners, thinking of a good way to explain why she didn't mind people just dropping by. "It's even helpful to me. Most people who come here are only looking for the more simple stuff and its like, once you get to a certain level you start forgetting that stuff, so it helps that I have to remember it all the time?" She wasn't entirely sure that made sense.

Flipping through a few more pages she found the one she'd actually been looking for. "Plus teaching it helps you learn it better."
